As a viewer (Twitch/YT), what layout do you prefer the most to watch when watching a speedrunner?

I am a new speedrunner streamer, and while I am not new to Twitch, I'm still a small streamer, so I'd love to get some ideas/inspiration on what viewers like to see on a speedrunners stream.

I was thinking more in these lines, but feel free to tell me what you like:

  • Simple and clean. That's something that I personally like and more "me". I try to be simplistic to a certain degree, with the screen split into (only) 2 parts, where video/game obviously takes the main priority of the screen, around 70-80% of the screen. All other stuff (livesplit, controller and/or face-only cam (in a corner), chat, alerts etc.) are on the left or right side, or at the bottom. That way, nothing will be interrupting/placed on the game screen itself.
  • For me, it's either camera or no camera. No animated characters and such. If I don't have a controller camera, I at least have a button-screen that shows which buttons I am pressing. I wish I could point the camera to the hardware (tv etc.), but I mostly stream using emulators.
  • Good sounding mic and audio.

And that's about it.

Feel free to share your thoughts and tips on what you'd recommend a new speedrunner streamer should have in place. :)

Your instinct to keep it simple is wise. People making their first layout tend to overdo it with every possible extra element, cluttering up the game or just make a huge mess, when 99% of people only really want to see the gameplay and the timer.

some people also put splits/facecam on the right of the game but imo this isnt good. i believe the timer and face cam should be to the left of the game and then the chat should be to the right. making the most important part (the game) be in the center of your screen and you can easily and quickly look over at the splits, facecame or chat if needed.

with timer and facecam next to the twitch chat it looks very cluttered

Interesting inputs. Thank you both, ShikenNuggets and SioN!

SioN, would you happen to know some speedrunner streamers who does it like you suggest, so I can take a look? :)

most people do it the proper way of having splits on the left but every now and then youll see someone with splits on the right
